Jamaica endure tough opening round at 69th Caribbean Amateur Golf championship

Blog post descTuesday’s opening round at the 69th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship was a tough one for the Jamaican players who faced heavy rains which sent them off the course on two occasions. The championship is being held at the Royal Blue Golf Course, Nassau in the Bahamas. The six-member men’s team saw former national golf champion Oshae Haye posting the best score of six over par 78 along with two-time representative Purbo Camden who also scored 78 to be joint 30th on the leaderboard. They were 12 shots off the lead by Andrew Jarvis of the Cayman Islands who shot a very low score of six under par 66 for his first round. Scores for the other Jamaican players were Trey Williams nine over par 81 for 41st place, Owen Samuda 13 over par 85 for 48th place while Dr. Mark Newnham and Zandre Roye both shot 87 and were tied for 52nd place. The challenge on the course extended to the female golfers as well with Kierra Williams posting the best score for team Jamaica. She carded six over par 78 and ended in sixth place at the end of round one of the three-round championship. Mattea Issa and Kingston Burke both shot 87 each to be joint 17th. Madison Carroll of host country, the Bahamas led the ladies after posting one over par 73 for her first round. The team will be looking to improve their scores in the next two rounds to make up ground on the leaders and their standing on the leaderboard. Jodi Munn-Barrow, president of the Jamaica Golf Association and team manager highlighted the first day conditions while being hopeful for better scores in the up-coming rounds. “Today was tough day. We had two weather delays and play was suspended and players had to come off the course. The course is playing extremely tough, long for the ladies. Team Jamaica didn’t have a very good day today but everyone is trying their hardest and they are definitely look up for tomorrow and the final round.” This year’s championship is drawn from 10 countries including defending champion Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia and the US Virgin Islands.
