DOUGLAS, CARD WIN WU20 100M SILVER MEDALS

Shanoya Douglas and Gary Card earned Jamaica’s first set of medals at the ongoing World Athletics Under 20 championships at Hayward field in Eugene, Oregon winning silver medals in their respective 100 M event.

Douglas entered the final as race favorite boasting the honor of the only sub-11 runner in the field with her 10-point-98 personal best ran earlier this year. She however could not reel in the fast-starting American Mia Maxwell who pulled away for the gold medal in 11-point-14 seconds, Douglas took home the silver medal 11-point-17 seconds. Italy’s Kelly Ann Doualla Edimo won the bronze in 11-point-27 seconds.

The other Jamaican in the field Theianna-Lee Terrelonge finished down the pack in sixth place with 11-point-37 seconds.

Maxwell’s gold medal the first since Candace Hill in 2016 ended Jamaica’s hold on the women’s 100m title after Briana Williams in 2018, Tina Clayton in 2021 & 2022 and Alana Reid in 2024.

Meanwhile, in the men’s equivalent Gary Card was chased down by American Tate Taylor who won in a personal best time of 9-point-94 seconds. Card who is the under 20 world leader in the event, clocked 10-point-05 seconds for the silver medal and South Africa’s Marko Ferreira took bronze in 10-point-16 seconds.

Both Douglas and Card will now turn their attention to the 200 meters.
